ISU Book

The book I am reading is Sold by Patricia McCormick. The book connects to the Book of Negroes since both deal with slavery. Both characters live by the words of her mother to continue her journey through child prostitution that she was sold into. There is a common theme of influential views of parents affecting the main character. Both characters are also relatable since they have experienced being sold, and losing their sense of freedom. Both characters face major set backs but overcome them by the connections they make. They both face a form of slavery, Amanitas is the most commonly known form, and fortunately is mostly extinct are the world. But the main character of Sold is experiencing a more modern version of slavery. A common connection between the two characters, is they have friendships and relationships that are key to there survival. Both of the books have a strong female lead, which helps guide the story.

  1. Hey Olivia, I really like your comparison of the Book of Negroes and your ISU novel. I think these books are ideal to compare to each other, since they both deal with slavery. My ISU also deals with slavery, so I have a similar comparison. Maybe you could have provided a small summary of your ISU novel, before comparing both of the books. Also don't just focus on the plot similarities but try to dig deeper. In general I feel like this is a great post and you did a very good job on comparing the two books.

  2. This sounds like a very interesting book. It seems like there is a lot of common ground between the two books, so a compare/contrast essay would work well. I'm really curious as to what thesis you will use and how you will prove that. I don't know much else about the book, but judging from the title and your synopsis, it sounds like it was made to be compared with The Book of Negroes. If I have one suggestion for your blog, it might be to change the colours of the text/background to make it a bit easier on the eyes. Otherwise, good job!
